Evaluation - George Taylor

1.) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For our Main Task as a group we tried to find influential films based on our product we wanted to create, I chose Marvels Thor: The Dark World. The reason i chose this is because of the introduction to its film the first 3-5 minutes of the film set the scene and plot line for the rest of the whole film.

Frame 1: This frame shows the production company of the film, "Marvel Studios" this means that it was there job to create the film, write it, film it and put it all together to have the final product, although it was Distributed by Walt Disney, it does not show this in the openeing section of the film.

Frame 2: Frame 2 consits of an over the shoulder shot that reveals what this character here is looking at, while this is happening, one of the main characters is narrating over what is happening infront of the audience, this allows for the audience to know what is happening during this scene.

Frame 3: This shot is another over the shoulder shot, and we are yet to see this characters face, this leaves an element of mystery. Once again in this frame there is a voice over explaining the lore of what is happening in this world.

Frame 4: In this shot there is an reveal shot, commentating over what is still happening as if he was recalling a story or recalling a memory. This shot is important as it acts as a twist to the intro.

Frame 5: Still with a narrating voice over reveals what the power of these people are, the “Good people” are showing to be all powerful and act as the heroes in this scene.

Frame 6: In this shot, the loud uplifting music tells me that these people that have come are saviours, the lighting shows an almost holy sense about the people that are emerging from the glowing smoke and lights. The panning crane shot lets the viewers see all the fighting that is going on and also the new characters coming into the shot, emerging from the smoke.

Frame 7: This upshot on what we now know is the “Bad Guy” tells me that we are supposed to know that this character is very powerful as he looks don on the battlefield. The low up lighting illuminates the character foreshadowing impending doom.

Frame 8: This close up shot of what the powerful evil character shows me what he is holding in his hand, this is what the upshot was foreshadowing. The stone has a focus pull so we know we should be focusing on what’s in his hand.

Frame 9: After the close up focus pull the “Bad guy” jumps down from his high-up position to join the fight, with his new found power (the stone), the music increases in pace, as a tracking shot is used on the enemy. The increasingly fast paced music tells me that something intense is about to happen. There are other people fighting in the foreground but the focus stays on the Bad guy, this gives an impression that a lot is happening on screen but we shouldn’t take our eyes of this character.

When comparing our final product to the introduction of a professional Marvel Film, we use simmilar layouts, our two companies at the start, and even though my 9-frame doesnt show that as does the Marvel film. Another convention that our film shares with the Marvel production, Thor, is that they use a Narrator, to set the scene and tell a story about the proceeding film, as do we, you can see Toby talking about his "Power" and what its like to be him, using this we also set the scene for the rest of the film.

Frame 1: Like the profession film, our first frame is the Production Company “CTMG”, it is a smooth intro with a reveal to the final product of showing the name, much like Marvels flick book reveal method where its flicking through a comic book to reveal the word “Marvel”.

Frame 2: This frame is dedicated to the Distribution company, much like in the Thor Film they have a separate distribution film but Thor choose not to show this.

Frame 3: This shot, introduces the important main character, by using a medium close up, similar to my influential film, where they introduce a very important character straight away. In this shot out main character is talking about his normal day to day life.

Frame 4: In this our main character is narrating over clips of what he is talking about, in this he is tapping a pen which represents that he is in school and is bored, this is relatable to our target audience. This close up leaves mystery but allows the audience to see what we was trying to portray.

Frame 5: The editor used a transition her to let the audience know we are returning our main character as he continues to explain about his life.

Frame 6: Her shows the main characters friend on the phone to him this medium close up is narrated over.

2.)How does your media product represent particular social groups?

With our Film we tried to go for a more, modern, and appealing approach to the teenage to young adult age group of a social group, the picture i feel represents this social group well. I feel this age group is appropriate as the protagonist of our Film is "Joey" who is also part of this age/social group. The thing about this age/social group is they all wonder "What if i were different" and this film could be relate-able to actually see someone that is different and how they are coping with it.
As you can see Joey looks like a typical teenager, he has long hair and wears checkered shirts, this in my opinion would be the typical looking teenager for our day an age and that is the demographic that we tried to appeal to with Joey. This picture i found i believe represents the age group and social group that our main character, Joey, represents. In the images you can see that the characters are doing typical things that you may see a teenager doing, Joey is looking down and hes on his phone as hes walking home from school, and also the image that i have taken from the mainstream media shows a teenager riding a skateboard. Both the images show the boys in urban environments which may be relate-able to those viewing the film as many people live in built up urban areas. You can tell that these teens are conforming to social standards, both dress smartly but have slight rebellious and likable features about them.

3.) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution
I feel as though a company such as "Warner Bros Pictures" would distribute our media product as they have dealt with films simmilar to our own. They have distributed the filme "Batman Begins (2005)" and this film is considered quite dark and how someone deals with the power that they have been given, in this case Batman wants to protect Gotham but he has problems along the way that make him interesting, whereas in our film we have Joey, who is openly talking about his power and you seem him go through his day to day life trying to deal with these powers that hes got and he feels far from blessed with this gift he has been given and this may be appealing to Warner Bros as this could be considered a serious film that they may want to take on.

Funding
We would have the biggest funding company in britain on our side, the BFI, which invest lottery funds across a huge mix of media products. Also the UK Government offer help to those in the UK making films. FILM 4 productions would be a useful asset to the creation of our film as they helo to fund and produce UK films, this means that with the help of FILM 4 productions we could improve the overall success of our film not just with funding but also with the help of production

4.) Who would be the audience for your media product?

Name: Max Taylor

Age: 18

Hobbies: Reading fantasy Novels and watching Critically acclaimed films.

About this person: Max is a standard 18 year old he loves to go out, socialise and have fun, but when hes home and needs some down time he enjoys reading long interesting books about adventure, a good example is the Game of Thrones Series. The reason Max would enjoy our media product is because we feel that due to the types of films he enjoys he would also enjoy our production.
Max is part of the age group with the largest cinema attendance as the 15-24 age group are 33% of all movie goers, and that is the age group that the film we have created is aimed at, which is helpful to the success of our film. Max tends to watch his media on platforms such as Netflix and on demand, he watches television series such as Game Of Thrones on demand and series such as Bojack Horseman on Netflix, as you can see Max enjoys story driven series and also a lighthearted comedy from time to time. He watches most of these on his own as he feels that it helps him get engrossed into the story, which increases his overall enjoyment of the series/film

5.) How did you attract/address your audience?

In order to get feedback on my film i addressed the audience by presenting them with the film once, when they had seen the film, i handed them the  questionnaire as can be seen below, with the questionnaires in hand i allowed them to see the film once more. This allowed for them to get a chance to give feed back to help me assess what kind of audience i would attract based on age group.

6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I made this collection of images to show some of the software that we used, such as Sony Vegas Pro 13 and Audacity. We also use various PCs and laptops when editing. I learnt how to use these softwares correctly and effectively to create our final product, It wasnt my main job to edit but I watched Micheal edit and i learnt from watching him. Whereas my main role within the group was the cinematographer as ive had previous experiecne using, but what i mainly learnt was how to use the tripod and the Camera to create effective angles.

7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation - Michael Higgins

Question: 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Influential Film:

1) The first frame in my influential sequence is of the company that distributed the film, in this case it is Universal, this is a convention of film openings as most movies start by showing the logos of the distribution company. The logo plays in its entirety and has the films main theme soundtrack playing over it instead of the default sound for the logo.

2) Then we see the logo for another distribution company, this time it is Marv Films. Again the main theme music for the film continues to play but begins to fade; we see the full length of the logo with no editing other than the replaced audio.

3) No more logos are shown and we then start to see the opening credits for the film. The first title we see is of the two distribution companies names followed by the word "Presents" which is another convention of film openings. The font style is bold and has a heavy drop shadow to it which almost makes it look 3D, the titles fade in and out of the screen and there is no movement to them. I used this as the influential film for our main task because i wanted to use the style and layout of the logos and titles in our film.

4) While the same establishing shot is playing in the background another title using the same style fades in, this time the title is for the producer/production company of the film. The title only lasts for two seconds just like the first title and it fades in and out with no movement to the titles. These titles are conventional for a super hero film because of their comic book style and the bold powerful text resembles the qualities of a super hero.

5) After a short scene between the two main characters we see the films logo on its own on a black screen and it cuts in with no transition. Music starts very loudly and suddenly it transitions out as a new clip fades in and the title disappears into the side of a school bus as they are the same colour. Again there is no movement of the title it sits stationary in the middle of the screen for four seconds until it transitions of screen. A voice over from the main character starts to play as the level of the music drops to a much lower, but audible, level and this plays through most of the opening with some dialogue in places.

6) The next set of titles that appear are the titles for all the main actors and actresses in the film, they are on screen for around two seconds just like the titles for the companies that are involved with the film. They use the same font and style as the other titles and again they fade in and out when they are on screen. However, this time they are near the bottom of the screen, usually trying to stay out of the way of the actors if that is at all possible.

7) As the opening continues more and more titles show of people involved with the film, the first to show however that is relevant to the main roles which we had as a group for our product is the editor. The name appears below their role in making the film and their name is in a much larger font size than their role is, any letters after their name such as "A.C.E." appear in a much smaller font size too. Again they fade in and out as they are on screen but they only last for around one and a half seconds while they are on screen, so they are much shorter than any other the other credits.

8) After the editor title appears, the directory of photography (cinematographer) is shown and then the producers names are shown, there were multiple sets of producers as there are associate, executive and just normal producers to credit so they had a much longer screen time. But each title only had a screen time again of around one and a half seconds. They continued to follow the conventions and style of the genre, never changing throughout the opening; the titles only ever changed position on screen to avoid blocking out the actor's performances. Voice over from the main character is still playing through out alongside the main soundtrack of the film.

9) The opening sequence ends with the title for the director which again has the same style and conventions as the other titles. This time the title is in the middle of the bottom of the screen as it is much more important than the other roles that appeared. The title is on screen for much longer this time as well, for around 3 seconds, again it fades in and out at the same speed but it is last and stays on screen longer because it is a more important role. Having the titles in this order is a convention of film openings and having the director last is used in nearly all movies.

Our Film
1) The opening to our film starts by showing the logo of the production company, this is different to my influential film in that it is not a distribution company that is show.  Also, it differs from our influential film because the normal audio from the logo plays and not the film's main soundtrack, like it does for the opening of Kick-Ass 2.

2) Instead of using a second logo for a distribution company we started the opening to the film, which is not how my influential film started. However, the opening to Kick-Ass 2 does start by saying the name of the distribution company with the word "Presents" after it and that's exactly what I did to our opening to make it like our influential film. There is no establishing shot behind the text but the titles were the main influence for our film alongside the sound. The titles fade in and out just like our influential film and have a similar style to them, although the font is slightly different but is similar.

3) Then, I added the title for the production company which again is nearly identical to that in my influential film, the title is not in the centre of the screen because otherwise it would have blocked the acting as there was no establishing shot used. The titles stay on screen for a couple of seconds and just like Kick-Ass 2 the main soundtrack is very feintly playing in the background. At this point the actor in the clip starts to talk which is used a voice over also, which again is similar to my influential film, however, the voice over starts much earlier in our film due to time length limitations.

4) The first set of people to be introduced that were a part of the making of the opening are the actors, this again is identical to how my influential film's titles are laid out; apart from the fact that the main title does not appear after the companies names but instead right at the very end of the opening. The titles for the actors again follow the same style and fade in and out patterns as the rest of the titles and are only onscreen for around one and a half seconds, just like in Kick-Ass 2. The actor's names also appear in order of most screen time, which again is just like my influential film, I wanted to make the titles relate to my influential film as much as possible without copying them completely.

5) I started off by putting my name first in the list of filmmakers involved in the opening as I was the editor of the opening and in my influential film, the editor of the film is the first to appear out of all the other roles that are present in my influential film's opening sequence. I made sure that the role title had a much smaller font that the name did and that the name was underneath the role with no punctuation after the role title. I also continued to use that same font and style as the rest of the opening so that again it matched the titles in the opening from Kick-Ass 2.

6) The next name I added was the cinematographer as he was the next role that was in the opening of my influential film after the editor. I used the same style of title and made sure the on screen time was still only around 1 to 2 seconds for each title and that the titles did not block any acting that was appearing behind the text graphics.

7) Then I did the same for the producer as he was the second to last name to appear in my influential film opening just before the director, I only added the main roles that we had in the opening as titles because there was not enough room to get the effect with the opening that I wanted and to put all the titles for the minor roles and have all the roles in the exact order as my influential film.

8) The last name to appear in the titles is the director, again the titles stay out of the way of the acting and follow the same style as the rest of the titles and have a similar style to the titles from my influential film. The director came last in the Kick-Ass 2 opening credits sequence so I made sure to follow the order of all of the roles that were in both openings exactly so that they had a very similar timeline. The director's name is on screen for slightly longer just like it was in Kick-Ass 2 in order to make sure I followed the conventions of a movie opening.

9) The titles to our opening end with the main title, this is different from Kick-Ass 2 as it was much earlier on in that opening, however, I did still follow a lot of the other conventions when adding in the title such as having it on a black screen and putting the text in the middle of the screen. The title cuts in with the main soundtrack playing much louder once the title appears and the title last for around four seconds before transitioning out just like the main title does in Kick-Ass 2. There is one last clip after the last title before the opening ends, this is also different from my influential film as the end of the opening is marked by the last title.

Question: 2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The social group that our film represents is teenagers from ages 15-18 that are in education, I say this because our main character, Joey, is a 16 year old boy who lives a very normal school and social life and does not seem extraordinary at all; his hobby is skateboarding and this will appeal to
skateboarders. This means that both our character and the group we are trying to represent have things in common and it can be clear to see that our character is a re-presentation of this group. However, the physical appearance of our character and his surroundings would suggest that he represents another social group and the posters in the background show that his is also part of a social group that is interested in a certain genre of music; this difference in appearance places him in multiple social groups and represents a wider range of teenagers. The main social group we are representing is older teenagers that are in education, we have many smaller social groups that are represented in our characters hobbies and interests such as skateboarders and those who listen to rock music. The idea behind representing this social group when making our film is that it is relatable by the majority of the fantasy genre's viewing audience and so this would create much more audience appeal for the film as it allows viewers to be drawn into this new reality much easier if they see themselves as the main character.

Question: 3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A commentated video presentation explaining which institutions from both the US and UK would fund, produce and distribute my media product with references to my influential film: https://youtu.be/BvUYNGnQBLY

Question: 4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
Name: Jesse Mautner

Age: 17
Interests: Jesse enjoys hanging out with friends, whether that be at the cinema or at a sports game or at home watching a DVD or playing video games. Jesse enjoys action and fantasy films and regularly watches films on demand when he can't see his friends.
Interest in cinema: Jesse loves to watch films and go to the cinema as he loves to get into the storyline and taken out of his reality so he can focus on the films reality as if he was there. He also loves talking about and discussing the film afterwards with his friends and telling other people about the films he has seen.
Why is he a good person to go see our film?: Jesse would go and see our film as he is very into the fantasy and action genres as most teenagers are, this means that our film fits this genre choice perfectly. This film is also as film he would want to see with his friends so that they can all talk about it after they've seen the film creating a better social bond as they all enjoy the same types of film.

Question: 5) How did you attract/address your audience?

Annotated Version of our film explaining how we attracted/addressed our audience: https://youtu.be/wCp7YTsvl0Y

Question: 6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Top, Left: The program I used to edit our main task and preliminary was called Adobe After Effects CC and in order to edit the film I had to learn how to use the program to edit in a way that would make it look like it had been professionally edited as I already had experience in AAE but not editing films.

Top, Middle: The tripod we used was a Hama tripod that we borrowed from our teacher but sometimes I had my own tripod with me. I have some experience with a tripod in other subjects and outside of school so for me there was not much to learn with this piece of equipment.

Top, Right: For the introductions for the production and distribution company I did the animations and 3D work in a program called Cinema 4D, it allows me to sculpt 3D creations and animate them such as the text and moving 2D shapes. I've used this program a lot in the past but it was a while ago so I had to watch tutorials and other videos to relearn how to use the program.

Middle, Left: My USB stick was used to carry files from the camera and school computers where i found music and sound effects and did some editing to my computer at home to do the rest, it meant I could work on the film wherever there was a computer.

Middle, Middle: The canon camera was the camera we used to shoot our film as Toby, a member of our group, owned this camera and so it would have better quality that the school cameras that were available. I got to learn how this camera works and how our cinematographer uses this kind of camera to get different camera shots as it is much different to the cameras that were available as it is a DSLR, which I have lots of experience with but not for videos.

Middle, Right: The monitor was what I used to see what I was editing and in order to be able to get the clips as the tower to the computer needs a monitor of some kind.

Bottom, Left: This podcasting kit was what we used to record the original narration for the rough cut but we ended up scrapping that idea. To use this kit I had to learn how to set it up and how it works with the computer in order to record the audio and dialogue that I am responsible for recording.

Bottom, Middle: Audacity is the program I used in order to record any audio that came through the podcasting kit such as Toby's narration and dialogue and other sound effects that i could not find online so I had to recreate. It was hard trying to learn the correct settings but after some online tutorials I learnt how to get the best quality out of the audio.

Bottom, Right: This is the computer that I used in order to edit the film, create the introductions for the media companies and to find/record any sound effects and music that I needed. I am quite good with computers already as I used them a lot so there was nothing i really need to learn when using this computer.

Question: 7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?

A commentated video of both our preliminary and main task, explaining what I have learnt in the progression of our films and how I applied that knowledge to my roles in the group: https://youtu.be/-Z8TbiwI08E

Evaluation - Charlie Austin

              1)  In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (e.g. comparison nine frame analyses of your film and an influential film)

Influential film

1)  The first frame shows a long shot over viewing New York with the titles appearing on screen. The titles indicate the distributors of the film, being Universal Pictures and Marv films. The titles stay on screen as a push in shot occurs, and we hear a single piano note with a background beat, which creates the feeling of beauty or pride as we stare at the entire city. Also, the sound blends with the next scene as it shows the two main characters alone in a waste dump with so much open space and a great view of the city behind them

2)  The next frame shows how the push in motion has occurred, as we are closer to the city than before. The same white bulky text has been used, which generally has a sort of cartoony effect when looking at it; it allows the viewer to imagine it being similar to a comic book. The music starts to fade and a voice over of a young girl takes place, introducing a character.

 3) The next frame introduces characters. You see the two main characters, but it allows the viewer to see the twist in stereotypical super hero stories as we see what we think to be a geeky or nerdy student, with a young girl who is pointing a gun at him.
     4) Frame 4 is of the reaction to the young girl shooting him. The viewer receives some context to the previous scene as we see he has a bullet-proof vest on, allowing the viewer to realise they are practicing and experimenting. This scene also allows the viewer to realise these are the two main characters, as firstly the boy has a bullet proof vest on and is experimenting getting shot, and the girl is obviously another main character as she shoots him without any hesitation and enjoys doing so. The viewer realises these are not two average teenagers.
5)Frame 5 shows us the title to the film. It is on a black background and is a bright orange colour. The viewer can start to imagine this being like a comic, as the title is big and colourful and stands out, like a comic book title. In addition, the start of up-beat video game style music begins, creating the sense of it being like a super hero movie.
      6) The sense of it being like a comic book really starts to stand out when a title appears on screen in frame 6, and is identical to the type of title you would expect to see in a comic book. In addition, the voice over of the male main character begins, as he explains how he met the young girl and explaining who she is. The volume of the music is slightly lowered, but is still there to strengthen the comic book feeling atmosphere.
7)Frame 7 is similar to initial frames, in the sense that it is on screen and returns to the previous font type. However, the music and voice over is ongoing during this frame.
8)Frame 8 shows the actress of the young girl, whilst she is standing there watching the person who gave her a lift to school drives off. The shot pushes in on her to centre all the attention on her as it shows the viewer who the actor is, and what she looks like.

9)Finally, frame 9 is similar to frame 8, but we see the boy in what appears to be his usually surroundings. It is similar to frame 9 because he is in the centre of attention, by being in the middle seat of the sofa, whilst listing featuring names to one side of the frame.
To conclude, the 9 frame I have created shows how titles have been appropriately placed, in accordance to sound, to create the feeling of the opening being like a comic book through types of font and the music being like music you’d expect to hear in a super hero game. This suits the film as it is based around super heroes, which relates to our product as our idea includes having a power as well.
Our film
1)      In frame 1 you see our production company’s animatic. Although this doesn’t link with my influential film’s distributor/production titles, I find that having a separate animatic for your production team instead of just a title challenges the way some films just give a title for producers.
2)      Frame 2 is the animatic for an associated production/distribution company. Again this doesn’t coincide with the 2nd frame for my influential film, it still strengthens my point of us challenging how film makers generally start their films.
3)      Frame 3 shows our opening scene, where our main actor describes how he used to be an average teenager. Whilst this whole scene plays through its entirety, you see titles for production companies, and the crew that worked on the film. This links to my influential film as in the beginning of kick ass 2, the beginning shot is in a waste dump and a lot of the titles occur during the entirety of this scene.
4)      In frame 4, we start to see more of the links we made to the influential film. Firstly, our titles on screen link directly with kick ass 2 as we tried to replicate the white, bulky, comic book style font type it uses to display all the crew that worked on the film. The music we used was an attempt to replicate the kick ass music, as we went for a sort of soft sound with a good background beat like the music used in kick ass 2. We also lowered the sound during the dialogue as well.
5)      Frame 5 shows our main actor doing the actions he says he does during his first bit of dialogue (he talks about being an average teenager, and that he goes to school which we show with the shot of him in class with a pen) and you can see the transition back to the original shot where he explains his story. Notice how the titles are consistent in the sense the font type never changes and the titles still appear whilst the clip is playing, just like in kick ass 2.
6)      Frame 6 shows our side actor using his phone, which in the film demonstrates why our main actor is on the phone whilst walking home. This has a slight link with kick ass 2 in the sense that we are showing what happened earlier to our main actor, like in my influential film. Also, it shows you what the side actor is doing compared to the main actor, which you also see in kick ass 2.
7)      Frame 7 is where our main actor picks up the phone call from our side actor whilst walking down the street on his way home. Titles are still in the same order as kick ass 2 and in the same style as kick ass 2 as well. Sound at this point links with kick ass 2 also due to the fact the music is dimmed whilst the actor talks over the clip, known as a sound bridge.
8)      Frame 8 is a replication of the car as it comes towards our actor who is crossing the road unaware of it. This doesn’t have much link to my influential film, apart from the fact that sound is still similar.
9)      Finally, frame 9 shows the title of our film on a black screen. Although kick ass 2 changes the type of font for the title whereas our film doesn’t, we made it similar by adding the title of the film at the end of the clips that sets the context of the film, like in kick ass 2. We also used a black background for the title, which kick ass 2 does as well.

2)    How does your media product represent particular social groups? (e.g. comparison stills from your film and the wider media)

Throughout our short intro, we didn’t consider the social groups that we should or would convey, so our film doesn’t have a lot of groups to discuss in this question. Firstly, the social group we mainly consider is just average teenagers who do decently in school, and have common interests. Although we didn’t discuss this much, we knew as a group that to get a good amount of audience appeal, we needed a character that a lot of people could relate to. This is when we decided to make the main actor show the symptoms of an average teenager so that our target audience (people aged 16-21) could relate to the main character and take more interest in our short intro. Our short intro represents this social group by showing scenes and having narration that displays how our character is like many others, as he lives a slightly boring life in the sense that he goes to school, does work, talks with his friends, comes home, watches TV and does homework, and then generally goes to bed and repeat. This is strong link with the social group as many people live the same sort of life, or display one or more of those patterns in their daily routine. Also, the way in which our character dresses relates as he wears the type of clothes any average teenager would usually wear, for example hoodies, t-shirts, jumpers etc.

Below is a picture of what we imagined our social group would be like compared to our main character. Average teenagers, bored in class with no real excitement in their life. Also notice the clothing he is wearing, it is just average school student clothing. This is the audience we targeted and tried to replicate thorugh our main character in our main task.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? (e.g. voiceover analysis of the institutions that appear at the start of your film and the other titles)
4)     Who would be the audience for your media product? (e.g. focus group video and audience profile)

The audience for our main task short intro would be a teenager/young adult who shows interest in comics/cartoons including superheroes or people with special powers. There is a large fan base for this type of product and we hope our short intro will grab the attention of these kinds of people.

Age: 16
Gender: Male
Interests: Chris enjoys seeing movies frequently, whether it be on DVD or at his local cinema. He enjoys a mixture of action and superhero movies. Chris also likes comics, and has a huge collection that he enjoys reading often. He spends a lot of time at his local comic book store with friends looking at the newest comics available for purchase.

Why this kind of character is our target
People like Chris who enjoy action/superhero movies, and collect comics seem to find amusement from these things that heavily relate to superheroes that have superpowers. Our short intro is based around the average usual teenage boy who receives the power of immortality, which directly links with the interests of people like Chris. It allows these kinds of people to relate with the main character as most of these people will live average teenage lives as well, whilst also getting that kick of amusement from seeing how the main character, who haves the power of immortality, gains special abilities that no other teenager would have, and getting to see how it changes his entire life. We think these kinds of people would find a lot of interest in our short intro.

5) How did you attract/address your audience? (e.g. annotated analysis of your video)
  6)    What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (e.g. photos of technology taken during construction with evaluation of what has been learned)
Throughout creating our main task, we used a lot of different technology, as well as software for editing it.  I created a 9 frame which displays these different bits of technology and I will explain each one individually.
1 (Top left)
This is the computer we used to upload our main film and edit our film. Without this, we couldn’t have got our film on the blog, nor had the ability to edit our film to what it is now.
2 (Top middle)
This is just another angle of the computer we used.
3 (Top right)
This is the monitor we used to be able to see our main product. It provided us with a good quality view of our main task so we can see how it would look. Also, this allowed us to edit our film as we could see how different effects in the software would work with our main task.

4 (Middle left)
This picture shows our SD card for our camera, and a memory stick. The SD card allowed us to store the film on the camera once we recording it, basically making the filming possible.  We could store our film on the SD card, and connect it to the computer to upload our footage to it, so we could edit it and then put it on the blog.
The memory stick allowed us to back up the footage, and allow each member to have a copy of it for the evaluation. This meant that if the SD card was lost or damaged, and our footage was therefore lost, we had a spare copy of it available.
5 (Middle centre)
This was our camera we recorded with. The camera costs roughly £110, but was a great investment as it allowed us to record in good quality, perform different effects with the film so we could test things, and actually record the footage.
6 (Middle right)
This is a pair of earphones. This allowed us to listen to the sound that came with our footage as well. The earphones gave us a good quality of sound, and allowed us to test if certain effects during editing worked, like Foley sound. This ensured that when our film was uploaded, the sound quality was of a good level and you could understand dialogue during it.
7 (Bottom left)
This is a podcasting kit. We used this mainly for the voiceover of the film. A podcasting kit allowed us to create a good quality narration/voiceover with a low amount of background noise and clear sound. Whilst using the podcasting kit, we also used audacity, a software to record sounds.  I learnt using audacity that we can enhance our sound and make it of a better quality so our film seems more professional.
8 (Bottom centre)
This is a USB lead. This allowed us to connect our camera to the computer, and be able to copy it so we could then edit it and upload it to our blogs. Even though the SD card could just be used, this is another very popular alternative as some computers may not have a slot for an SD card, meaning this would be the only possible answer.
9 (Bottom right)

This is a tripod. This made making our film look more professional much easier, as we could have steady shots, instead of everything being hand held and shaky. This allowed our cinematographer to earn more points as it made the filming of steady shots more professional, whilst making our film actually look like a proper media product.

   7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? (video comparison of the preliminary film and main task with voiceover)

Evaluation - Toby Saddleton

1.) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For This 9 frame, the rows go in order. Row 1: 1 - 3, Row 2: 4 - 6, Row 3: 7 - 9

Frame 1:
For this film, there are no titles. However the film starts off with the Warner Bros logo (distributors and Production). It is in a black and white screen at this point which could be used to show the audience that the following film could be dark. Normally the Warner Brothers title is in colour (Blue sky with white clouds and a golden logo) but personally I feel that the black and white filter on the screen works better.

Frame 2:
The second frame starts with images from the DC universe (super heroes/villains) and it pulls out and has a comic book animation to it. The whole purpose of having the DC comics at the beginning is because they were apart of the production and also it is the brand that Batman originates from.

Frame 3:
In the third frame, we see some animation of bat's which fly around and eventually form the batman logo, this would be used to get the audience excited and interested as they want to see more than just bats flying around on the screen.

Frame 4:

In the frame, we see two young children playing hide and seek. The camera moves with them (moves more with Bruce) which would suggest that these two characters will be significantly important to the rest of the film.

Frame 5:
In this frame there is a close up of the Bruce to show that he is hiding from his friend, Rachael. This shows how close that the two friends are.
Frame 6:
When we see Bruce fall down the well we immediate realise that this introduction of how Bruce became to dislike bat's and how he might use it against people in the future.

Frame 7:
When we see this dark gloomy cave, it adds a mystery to what might be further into this cave, this is pretty crucial as it is a big part of a tense build up.
Frame 8:
The mystery as to what is in the cave is revealed when a swarm of bats fly out of the cave and fly up and out of the well that we just saw Bruce fall down.

Frame 9:
There is a sudden cut to a man laying on a bed, we assume that this is Bruce in modern time as he jumps a bit when he wakes up. This shows that it was a dream on something that has once happened to him.

Frame 1:
When looking closely at the films (Batman and "Alive") as a group we decided that we would use 2 company like names to open up our main task. We have used "CTMG" in this case as it is the production company.

Frame 2:
"Wolfblade XV" is our distributors. This is the exact same order as Batman Begins (Warner Brothers is apart of the production and Distribution).

Frame 3:
From after the distribution logo we then went for a more modern "superhero" genre film "Kickass". We have used the same title sequence as it to make it clear that as a group we have acknowledged to order of the titles.

Frame 4:
However like in batman, we use flash backs in the introduction (batman starts off with a flash back of Bruce as a child). And we thought that it would be good a bit of a mix and match of Kickass and batman as batman hasn't got any titles but the way it's set out is good and the beginning to Kickass isn't great but has good titles.

Frame 5:
Unlike Batman, Our film uses a lot more of a cut away during our introduction and we see less of it in the batman introduction as we don't see Bruce as a grown up until we have seen him wake up from his dream.

Frame 6:
In this frame we show Joey's friend, "Mickey". We see him on the phone to Joey's character and during this phone call Joey is giving a voice over on how he personally feels about his experiences with his powers.

Frame 7:
We see slight build up when joey is talking to the camera, we continue to cut away from the recorded diary entry and what happened as in my opinion it builds up an atmosphere, where as with batman it shows the entire flashback and then cuts away to modern time.

Frame 8:
In the frame, Joey ends his speech by saying "my name is Joe Brasinski" this is shortly followed by the sound of car tires screeching and a quick fade to black, this is a good way to let the audience know that this is something that has once happened instead of showing the character being younger and then showing them when they're grown up.

Frame 9:
The use of the title being shown here is so that the audience know a bit of the story and may answer any enigmas later on in the film. With the batman introduction however they use iconography (the swarm of bats) to use as their title, as it is something its something that fans can identify as a type of logo.

2.)How does your media product represent particular social groups?

A particular social group that I think represents the main task well is the group of teenagers from the media show 'Misfits'. The character Joe would most be suited to the character Simon as when they first discover their powers, they are unsure on what they should do and they also use camera's to record their story. Joe personally talks to the camera, breaking the fourth wall where as Simon records the events that occur during his time on community service. Even though Joe has a very similar representation to Simon, Joe could also be compared to another character: Nathan. You can compare Joe and Nathan as they both have the same power of Immortality. Joe would dress more like Nathan as it is more of a casual type of clothing where as Simon tends to wear padded hoodies and also wears a mask to protect his identity. Joe and Nathan however, do not have the same type of personality and Nathan tends to be rather crude and childish the majority of the time. Even though Joe and Simon have similar personalities, they are both interested in different topics. Joe likes to skateboard and has more of a social life whereas Simon really likes to record videos and edit them on to dvd's. Their bedrooms are also rather different as Simon has wallpaper with different planets on and then Joe has his room full of posters of bands and video games. Joe is also similar to Simon in the ways he says things. Simon tends to mumble slightly and is usually more silent when around people but he speaks his mind. Nathan however has a northern accent and is usually making sexual innuendos and making everything rather mellow dramatic which is something that we don't see from Joe.

3.) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

This is a link to my YouTube video which includes myself giving a voice over on who could distribute our film, who could produce our film and who could fund our film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkzP6fFMDNw&feature=youtu.be

4.) Who would be the audience for your media product?

Name : Max Saddleton
Age : 19
Hobbies: Reading graphic novels, watching super hero films, attending Comic-con
About Max: Max is an young adult who is currently in his second year of university. Max likes to read graphic novels and if possible watch the film version after so he can then decide which one is better. So far his favorite graphic novels are "V for vendetta" by Alan Moore and all of the batman Graphic Novels. The reason that Max would like a film like this is that it is a different approach to the stereotypical super hero and villain and the film uses a super power that is commonly used, however the way the power is shown is completely different to most films as it is more formal and is set out like some sort of video diary. Max also loves the film "Fight Club" and knows the majority of the lines in the film, a reason why he might like this film is that they both end up breaking the fourth wall, meaning they engage with the audience on a more personal level and making the film far more engaging than most other films. He has also been to comic con in 2014 and attended a speech/talk that was given by Stan Lee who has had a huge impact on the superhero based stories in the comic book industry.

5.) How did you attract/address your audience?

One way I tried to attract an audience is to post the link of the film introduction onto my twitter account, by doing this it allows any followers to click on the link and to watch the Video, I introduced the video in an informal way as I thought that by doing this it would be a way that perhaps Joe would act or be online.

Here is a link to my annotated video of how I addressed/attracted my audience:

6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

A 9 Frame showing the technology that I have used in the main task. The Numbers go from left to right, 1 and 8 being the very top and the bottom left. The rest go from left to right.

This is a nine frame to show what technology I have come across and used when making, filming or uploading clips for the main task's video, Alive.

1 and 8) This is a standard Panasonic HD camera. This would be used to record the footage that was used for the main task. The camera is simple to use as it has a flip out screen and it also has a visible buttons on the side and are labelled rather simply and it is covered by the flip out screen.

2) This is a memory stick, this isn't the exact one that was used however it is still the type of the technology that was used. The exact memory stick that I used was a TDK 16GB memory stick. By using this I have learnt how to copy and paste different files over from one computer to another.

3) This is a tripod in which we used was used to make some of our shots steady and less shaky when filming footage. When using the tripod for the first time I was a bit unclear on how it worked, once asking how it worked I leaned how to extend the legs out and how to raise/lower the tripod's head.

4) This is a pod-casting kit, it was going to be used originally in our rough cut however I didn't really feel that it was necessary in the end. However I leant that that it is rather simple to use and you can run it easily on a programme called "Audacity". The pod-casting kid was rather simple to use as you had to plug the USB into the computer tower, open Audacity and hit the record button.

5) This is a tower that stores all the data and any programmes on it's hard drive. This is what we used to upload any blog posts and it was a very crucial part of equipment and technology that we needed to use. It is very simple to use and was the main piece of equipment that was used throughout the Preliminary and Main Task.

6) This is a USB cable. This is used to connect the camera to the computer and therefore upload any videos to the computer and if the editor was going to edit some of the filming at home, he would copy and paste the footage onto his memory stick. Using the cable would mean that you can copy, paste and save any footage and data onto the computers hard drive or any memory stick.

7)
This is a piece of software that I have on my Iphone, it's called "Voice Memo" and I used the app to record my voice overs for my other questions. Then once i had the memos I uploaded them to my Itunes library and converted them into an MP3 file, this then meant that I could upload it to Movie Maker and use it for the questions.

9) This is an Iphone. It was used to record the behind the scenes footage with and it is simple to use, if you simply push the main button on the front of the phone, swipe up on the right hand side of the screen, the camera will open. After that you just swipe left or right and find the "video" section and therefore can start to record footage.

7.) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Here is a video that I have edited using Windows Movie Maker and comparing the techniques and progression between the groups Preliminary Task and the Main Task
